What does a currency conversion tell you?
Converting a salary at an exchange rate expresses the same amount in another currency; it does not establish the life that income can support. The same product may sell at different prices, while rent and daily expenses consume different shares of income. NationGAP therefore shows national average net salary, non-rent living costs and same-model product prices separately. It does not require personal income input or promise an equivalent standard of living.
Expense share and price difference are distinct measures
Expense share divides monthly living costs by net salary in the same country. For a purely illustrative example, 1,000 units of costs and 2,000 units of income give a 50% share; these are not observations for any country. A second country can have higher prices and wages while still showing a lower expense share. A percentage-point gap subtracts the two ratios and is different from percentage price growth. Do not interpret a non-rent measure as a budget including housing.
How many working days does a product represent?
Product price ÷ average monthly net salary × monthly working days compares access to the same product relative to income. Living expenses are not deducted, so the result is not how long you would actually need to save for it. Model, capacity, taxes and bundle scope need to match. Benchmark car or footwear data should not be read as exact-model prices. Treating a missing price as zero would also imply a free product; NationGAP does not fill absent prices with guesses.
Turning a comparison into a useful decision
First check source dates and whether each observation describes a country or a city. Then compare like currencies, periods and household scopes. National average salary should not become assumed student income, and a city rent should not stand for an entire country. Start with the sourced tables below and investigate actual housing in your chosen city separately. Considering expense shares alongside the gaps in the evidence is more useful than simply seeking the lowest price.
